John W. Thomas was the president of the 1897 Tennessee Centennial Exposition (world's fair) that produced the Parthenon (seen in background). When I was taking pics, at first I was annoyed by the people hanging around the statue; but in retrospect, I think I kinda like having them there. This isn't just a dead monument, it's a place where people hang out, read, eat, even blow bubbles. :) So it seems appropriate that the person responsible for shepherding the expo to completion is now watching over the current generation, enjoying the fruits of his labor.
