1. What's your favorite animal to photograph?

Hmm. It would probably have to be the big cats I photographed at the refuge down in Baldwin City, particularly the tigers:

Wildlife

They had both the touch of dignity and grandeur that makes them a great photography subject... and that also makes them hold still long enough to get a good picture. :)

2. What was your introduction to anime?

Easy - the Dirty Pair, back in high school. Went to one of my first SF cons back in my sophomore year, and back then they let people operate semi-public showrooms/dealerstuff out of their hotel rooms. I saw someone playing these somewhat grainy animated shows, which reminded me of Speed Racer/Battle of the Planets - but in a foreign language, and like nothing I'd seen before!

Then the con changed its room policy the next year (understandable in hindsight, I'm sure they were getting a lot of complaints from the hotel and non-con guests), and I didn't see anything of them for years. Then my last year in college, we started to run into this thing called the Internet, and Mac IIfx's in one of the CS labs with actual ethernet connections, and the mysterious series of FTP sites with anime .gif files...

3. I'll recycle this one: Wackiest RPG session? (I love hearing wacky RPG session stories!)

Heh. This was at an Amber Throne War, run by Mike Loader for our online group - but on one of the two occasions where we all met up together in Lawrence. The way we ran it was everyone in Mike's living room for public events, then he would gather one or more players in his bedroom for individual runtime, or when two players were interacting, so everyone could keep the secrets that are part of a good Throne War. This one was set down in the Courts of Chaos.

I played a Logrus master based on Radical Edward from Cowboy Bebop; Rod played Lord Loewen, head of House Helgram and based on Shishio Makoto from Rurouni Kenshin. Loewen and Ed were having a private discussion, with Rod trying to interrogate me. Ed was being completely guileless, while Loewen was overbearing and threatening. At one point, he started demanding to know something about the late King Swayville. So Ed, 'innocently' helpful, conjured up a Logrusghost of Swayville.

Swayville was a publicly-known trigger for Loewen's rages, and fears - he was the one who caused Loewen to get burned in this universe - so Ed was expecting something to happen. But Loewen just stood there in shock. Ed decided to be helpful again, asked innocently "Oh, did you want more?", and conjured up eight more. Then he started to shake, so she decided to join them in dancing ring-around-the-rosey to help him relax. :) Mike has been looking increasingly boggled throughout this process, and finally he turns to Rod and says, "Loewen, your action?"

Rod just sits there for a minute. Then he gets this big grin, laughs, and says "What the hell, I'll join them." Cue Mike's bwah?!?

That wasn't the end, though. One of the other players, Trish, wanted to talk to Loewen. So Mike went out and brought her into the room with us. In this absolutely perfect I'm-not-sure-I-believe-what-I'm-saying deadpan voice, he says, "Loewen accepts your trump. You see Lord Loewen. You see Radical Edward. You see nine dancing Swayvilles. They are doing the conga." Pause. "Your action?"

Trish just stood there with an utterly gobsmacked look on her face, while Rod and I tried to keep from completely losing it. ^_^

4. Best restaurant you've ever been to?

Urgh. This is a hard one. I've been to a lot of really good restaurants, but none that really stand out as head-and-shoulders above the rest. Hmm.

Probably the closest I can come is a nostalgic favorite that isn't around, but that must have been good because it stuck in my memory. Back when I was growing up, going out to a steak dinner on birthdays was a tradition, and the one that sticks out in my memory is the Main Street Inn in Grandview. It was a little hole-in-the-wall place, and all the way across town from where we lived; but it was near only location for The Wholesale Club (which eventually turned into Sam's Club), so we heard about it and went there. I remember the steak there being tender, juicy, and very flavorful! :) As it happens, I currently work only a mile or two away from where it used to be, but sadly it's long gone.

5. Funny cat story?

Well, my last cat, of dearly departed memory, was Snickers. I got her as a kitten, and as a kitten I would pick her up and hold her up to my shoulder - whereupon she would usually climb up and lay across my shoulders, even when I was walking around.

She retained this habit as she grew older.

Years later, Mike and John both came to KU after I'd known them for a while online through the FFML, and we started getting together at my place on Saturdays for gaming, anime and other stuff. After watching Snickers on her usual perch, I was promptly dubbed 'Mobile Cat Platform Travis.' Many, many Snickers jokes resulted, particularly in our online anime/gaming group; Snickers' World Domination Plot was probably the best. (References may not make much sense if you aren't at least a little familiar with White Wolf's old Mage RPG, and the Technocracy.)

1. You are lucky! I imagine because of the heat, but every time I've been to the Baton Rouge Zoo, the tigers are laying on their sides snoozing. :p

3. I LOL'd. *g*

4. Mmm, I hear you. In Seoul when I was younger there used to be this amazing hole-in-the-wall joint that did boiled dumplings (mandu). The mandu were amazing--I've never since encountered dumplings of any kind that were so thin-shelled, and the filling was wonderful. The place was always full. But my sister reported that last time she went to look for it, either it was gone or had moved somewhere beyond her ability to find.

5. Aww, cat. (Alas, only peripherally familiar with Mage, so the references are lost on me.)
