The Final Stage

This is pretty much the last major evolution of the look of the Indy Car to date; there's considerable variation in detail, but look at pics from the 2015 Indy 500 and you'll see cars that have the same basic shape as these. Take the basic form of the mid-60s Lotus cars, and add front/rear airfoils to create downforce - the basic reverse of an airplane wing, racing 'wings' hold the car to the track, improving traction and cornering. Additional aerodynamic shaping on the body helps with this.
I'll be honest - I didn't take any individual pictures of this era's cars, because they just aren't that interesting to me. The wings may be effective, but they add clutter and take away from the clean lines of prior era's cars; and they dominate the car's looks to the point where they're the first thing you notice.
