I think the weirdest part for me is seeing the sponge-cake rock. I lived for a few years in Colorado growing up, and I've been going out to visit my friend in Vegas for several years, so I'm familiar with mountainous and desert landscapes (and mountainous desert landscapes for a bonus point!). I've seen soft sandstone formations and how they can crumble. But this is the first time I've seen rock that looks porous and spongy like that.
